In this following article, we will be looking at different vocabulary that is associated with the different modes of transport we have, either for a daily commute or travelling to an exotic destination.

1 –  Air Transport Vocabularyt]emirates 777

Air transport is considered by many as what made the world a lot smaller. Some argue that the ship had the most significant impact on the modern society. It is, however, the introduction of air travels, especially in the 1960’s with the launch of the Jumbo Jet, the 747 that contributed to the growth of mass travel, thus creating the modern traveler with access to airports all around the world.

The ancient Roman Empire is accredited to creating the earliest roads which allowed the Roman Legion to march, and their farmers to participate in trade. Villages became accessible between places, and we have never looked back ever since. We continued to progress until we made automobiles and buses allowing us to travel even further. Now we can cover hundreds of miles on the bus and we probably won’t even feel a thing. The expansion of the road network across the world and the advancements in buses have allowed us to travel certain places we never thought we would be able to access before.

Bus – autobús
Bus stop – parada de autobús
Ticket – billete
Bus driver – conductor/a de autobús

3 – Sea Transport Vocabularycruise ship

We always wondered what was beyond the oceans, and if we were the only creatures that were in existence. But that all changed with the invention of the sea ferrying vessel. All of a sudden, we could explore what was on the other side. This can be seen as in the 14th century – there was a boom in discoveries of what were called ‘new worlds’, by men such as Captain Cook, Lord Harrington and Christopher Columbus. However, as the world has progressed, the significance of ships has waned little by little. This is the case especially for travelling purposes, but if one fancies a cruise, I hear they are a big business now.

Captain – capitán/a
Cruise – crucero
Port – puerto
Tug boat – remolcador
Porter – botones/maletero/a
Rudder – timón

4 – Rail Transport Vocabulary

We probably owe much of where the world is today because the development of the train. The train spurred on the industrial revolution; it pushed the United States into the frontier, making the country grow from a group of colonies (which became states after independence) to a country that had a thriving economy by the mid 19th century. However, just like the ocean liners, the train suffered the very same achievements it had helped to develop. Innovation led to the invention of other modes of transport that were faster and more economically efficient. But trains have managed to find a new life this new world of globalization, as now they connect different areas of new mega-cities.

Train – tren
Railway – vía férrea
Train station – estación de tren
Engine – motor
Commute – viaje al trabajo
Boiler – caldera
